This week, I am looking at coats, jackets and blazers that you will keep going back to time and time again and will always keep your look modern, current and fresh as a daisy. These are pieces worth investing in and looking after, they’re the ultimate finishing touch to any outfit whether for business, events, or nights out and transcend all trends without ever being dated.
Traditional tweed gets a feminine and transeasonal update in pink. This one by Boden ($178.20, currently onsale) will work throughout more of the year in this colourway than the more usual browns and greens would. The pink gives a much lighter feel and will be on high rotation from September to May. The sporty aesthetic works with all pants and denim and would look great worn buttoned and belted over a midi pencil, or full skirt.
That Brit high street stalwart Marks and Spencer are great at the classic pieces (and underwear, but thats for another blog!)and what could be more classic than a camel, single breasted overcoat in wool with cashmere for a luxe , soft feel. At $241.00, it’s an affordable luxury piece and looks instantly chic.
No wardrobe is complete without a tuxedo style jacket and this double breasted version by And Other Stories is a must have. The $245.00 price tag defies the expensive look of this piece, a definite luxe for less look and one that will work with you throughout the seasons.
Another piece I wholeheartedly think should be part of a basic (yes, basic) wardrobe, is a statement coat and if you find one like this Baum Und Pferdgarten geometric print one ($361.00) with a waist emphasising detail when done up, then grab it. The beauty of this piece is that it’s not too heavy, so can be worn buttoned up with pants underneath, or just worn open with a simple tee, jeans and heels for an easy glam look. This will take you from Spring to Summer, to Winter, to weddings, parties, even the office, there is no end to its styling possibilities.
Sequins aren’t just for special occasions, wear them to add daytime sparkle to denim and an easy tee, a simple one button ,blazer silhouette will never date and this Rixey blazer by Rachel Zoe ($425.00) will be amongst your favourite pieces season after season.
Along with sequins, a metallic blazer with contrast black lapels, is up there on the wardrobe must haves list. Whether in gold, like this one by Alice and Olivia ($495.00), or silver, depending on your preference, they are a perfect way to inject some shine and sheen into your look and are great if you aren’t the sequin type.
You are definitely never too old for a classic, black, leather biker jacket. Go for one that is quite lightweight, you don’t want anything to bulky, we are still going for a more feminine vibe and pick the softest leather. This one by All Saints ($498.00) is perfect, cut a little slimmer and it sits on the hip, too long and it can drag you down, too loose and it doesn’t have the right effect when worn with dresses and skirts and will look too heavy. The key to finding the right one is you have try, try, try! There are also some fantastic faux leather ones out there, but buy the best, you want this jacket to, last and look as good as you do!
A classic menswear small plaid has been given the feminine treatment by Theory ($595.00) with a slim cut and a cinched waist. Wear with denim and flats for day and give it a night time feel with a silk camisole and heels (sandals or point toe suede stilettos).Plaid appears season after season, but can date when too “on trend”, so go for something more muted and transeasonal.
There is always something so string about a white tux with black lapels, this one by Tibi ($795.00) is in a light =weight virgin wool, so looks uber luxe and will be there for you all year round. Add a cool edge to your dresses by draping it over your shoulders and wear with leather leggings and heels for an undeniably chic look.
When we think of beautifully woven, tweed jackets, we think of Chanel , but this one by MSGM ($825.00) is a fabulous alternative, with frayed edging and fringing, it’ll be a coveted and adored piece in your wardrobe, the classic colour combination will ensure it gets plenty of wear too.
Hope this gives you some inspiration and remember, classic doesn’t mean boring, go for edgy cuts and modern silhouettes that don’t date.
